I have an 8'6" spinning rod that has seen all sorts of uses including trolling with a linecounter. It works great but isn't strong enough to pull anything more than a deep crank or Jet 20. I don't use inlines on it either. As long as you're smart about what you run and it's enough rod for the fish it should be fine.

It can work fine, but it all depends on what hermit said, what is pulling on the other end.

Thanks. I'm changing out three rods from spinning to line counters. Over at Olcott in June I have been using 15 lb test 230 yd capacity spinning reel no problem with handling 15-20 lb kings it had to wAtch line remaining, but this one king took the rig on a screaming run and could not even slow it down. Emptied the reel. New line counters are 400 yd capacity...twenty pound test . Rods are spinning 8ft, 3 inch... Rated for twenty pound test. I just wanted to see that fish...next time I think I will have the edge.
