New To Lake Ontario Fishing.

Hey there everyone.  I'm "new" to fishing in the area. I have a small Century Arabian 19 that we take out almost everyday/every other day. 

 

I am from Long Island and we always fished for Blue Fish, Fluke, Flounder, Snapper, etc. (believe it or not, I also enjoyed the fight from skate and sea robin and they're quite tasty too!) We had a 32ft Trojan fishing boat so much different than the small pleasure boat we have now.

I have poles still from when I was fishing the Ocean.  
 

 

I know how to fish for these guys. But I'm just not sure where to start with the lake. 

My boat is right where Irondequoit Bay opens up to Lake Ontario. 

 

I wanted to go throw some lines out there Saturday morning with a friend of mine, but I am out of my element here. 

 

We're planning on going out around 630 am and staying out until about 11. 

Any tips??
I don't know what to fish for or how to fish for it? Any advice on Rigs I should pickup and where to get them, bait/lures, and where I should be going/depth/etc?

 

I can be in 100 ft of water in about 3 miles. 

 

Any tips for a fun morning on the water?

Went out today in 130 feet of water and had the riggers at 65 and 85 using dream weaver flasher with an Atommik green hammer fly and caught 1

Not sure what equipment you have.  Most people who get into salmon and trout fishing on the lake troll.  Easiest and quickest setup is to get dispy divers and copper lines.  Dipsys at this time of year need to get deeper say 50-100 feet deep and you can't do that with mono.  You need to run dipsys on rods that have either get wire or braid loadedon the reel, braid being a pain to use at this time of year because of fleas.   From Dipseys or copper you can runs spoons like Dreamweavers, Michigan Stingers, Moonshine or Finger Lakes tackle.  You can also run spin doctors and flies or cut bait in meat heads.   If you want to continue to fish for salmon you need to also look into purchasing downriggers.

Wow, Fresh water fishing is a lot more involved than ocean fishing. 

I'm used to taking a poll, throwing some squid and shiner, a sinker, and pulling up dinner for the next few nights. 

*gulp*  

 

I guess I have a lot of learning to do.

  Short of talking to the guys at the "Tackle" shop and at the docks you might  want to sign up on for a charter. What you learn on one of those will outweigh everything else.

Charter is a good idea! I didn't think of that. 

I went to Dicks the other day. The guy knew nothing. Just got back from Field and Stream and one guy told me that my boat was too small and that I won't be able to fish the lake unless I go out and get downriggers....

I found another guy and he gave me some lures and told me to fish in 65-85 ft with them, or try for bass in the bay with some of the GULP lures on hooks, showed me how to get the rigs setup/etc. 

I tried to get a Dipsy but Field and Stream only had the gaskets or O-rings or whatever for them, but not the actual divers. They did have a small diver but only going to 30ft.  It looks like there are some the size of my fist so I'll have to look around or order online. 

Might have to try and convince the boyfriend we want to install a downrigger but I'm not sure he'll be thrilled with the idea. He hates fishing lol I'm on my own with this lol

I'll have to check out a charter! I used to go on party boats back down on the ocean. Fluke, Flounder, Blues, etc. We even caught a baby Mako once.  On our boat down there we got seabass and all of the above.

Seriously, the boat u have right now will have a few hurdles to get thru in order to be really setup for fishing. Especially if the boyfriend isn't into it. First issue is your rack over the boat, that is gonna make landing salmon difficult. Skip the down riggers. Install two be r t s rod holders on either side. Get yourself two dipsey rod setups and just run them. Otherwise, lots of good bass and other species in lake o that will not require specific tackle

emk101, welcome to the addiction!!  I took my nephew out Friday morning, fished just West of Braddocks Bay. picked up 3 kings, his first "big " fish on a wire diver. All fish in the 220 / 250 fow range, approx. 75 / 90 deep.
