Should be able to just slide the counter out away from the wheel and turn the gear on the counter as desired and slide it back toward the wheel

same issue on mine.  Have had difficulty sliding the counter out and don't want to break it.  Maybe I will lube it up and try again

Sometimes just a matter of lifting up a little and sliding it out a little to get the gear away from the wheel

Loosen the clutch knob so the spool can move slightly at the same time you pull out in the counter. Sometimes the teeth are "jammed" by the pressure

I bought new ones from Fish307.com. They carry a large supply of legacy downrigger gear. I have older (1980's) Mag10A's and have bought new counters and electrical cords etc from them. No issues whatsoever. The original counters had numbers that were simply stickers and they all started to come off and the plastic gears were really brittle and breaking so I replaced all of it.
