Just bought a new to me boat with a 2013 evinrude 150 2 stoke E tec. How important do you think it is to use evinrude oil. It was $42 a gallon compared to $20 of another brand. I had an older Merc that I used Walmart brand in and did just fine.

Well it's probably out of warranty by now but I had twin 200 Etecs and I wouldn't run anything but the 100 in it just because if I spent $50,000 on my motors and something happened cause I used cheaper oil well I would have been footing the bill cause warranty wouldn't cover it. You could get away with the 50 but wil foul out a bit faster and not sure what the off brands would burn like cause I never used them

Do you know how the previous owner had the engine programmed for oil use? The ETEC can be setup to use XD50 and aftermarket oils. It also can be programmed to use only the more expensive XD100 Evinrude oil. This is a leaner setting designed to be used with the 100 oil(pay more for oil but use less with less fouling). If you didn't get a manual for engine with boat, you should get one. Besides oil use it will give you info on how to "winterize" this engine-very easy. Might have to go to a dealer to attach laptop to check/change programming for oil and check for updates.

I'll check on the programming. I did get a manual with it and the winterizing technique is pretty cool. I did go online to check out options on the xd100 and ordered some from Amazon which was cheaper plus free shipping.
