I have downscan on my unit but seldom use it for salmon and trout. Mainly use just the fish finder screen and the GPS screen. These scans would seem more useful for bass walleye etc. where you are directly fishing structure areas. Much of lake O for example  in this area is  like a basin with only gradual changes in depth in the parts I fish with very little structure.

I have a Lowrance HDS gen II with side scan.  I changed boats two seasons ago.  The Side scan module and transducer reside in the basement.  

 

I have the 7 inch screen.  I use the plotter and depth finder, its too small for anything other than side scan.  I may get another screen this off season and link them.

 

 

My transducer picks up turbulence from the kicker.  (It did on the last boat anyway.)  There is a splitter and another transducer option.

I understand your answer both ways!!  ill probably pass on s/scan & save for the next $1k purchase. Does it ever end?
