Lake O Pickerel

Caught several pickerel on Saturday..... On a bay on Lake Ontario......3 fish were over 7 lbs. Ice conditions limited where we could fish. Pleased we could chase a few flags and have some fillets for a fish fry.

Those are nice pickerel and good eating. Never caught one in the SLR but have in Chaumont and Henderson. Wonder why they're not in the river? At least I've not seen one in 40 years.

Thanks kevin. Agreed. Pickerel are delicious! Not sure why they dont seem to inhabit the SLR.... I prefer to catch northerns but pickerel can be fun fast action. Early ice... All catches welcome:)

Pickerel that big could take the NYS Winter Classic Tournament - should get in if you're not already!! Winner last year was only 6.40 lbs...

Yes.... They were pigs.... I was saying to my buddy when we were catching them... I think the next state record is going to come from chaumont bay or Henderson. The pickerel seem to be getting bigger and more abundant every year.

Wow. multiple 7lb pickerel in one outing is extraordinary anywhere in the east where picks live. If u caught them in lake o embayments, they must be chowing down on gobies like other fish. And big as that, even bigger pike and musky might be chowing on them (the big picks) in the main lake and/or SLR. Bigger esox will move into accessible big waters for food and comfort.

By the way, world record for pickerel is 9lbs. 6oz. Biggest I caught was a hefty beautiful and hard fighting 4lbs. and at 32in. and broad bodied I thought it would weigh more.

My fav fish to eat ! Love the texture of meat. Very nice catch ! Wow, 7 lb. I have a place in fl where catching 5 lb fish during summer is a good chance. Nice job.

They are delicious! And i agree they have a wonderful texture... Seems firmer than many fish. Very tasty. Wish they werent so slimy though!

I always hose em off good with garden hose, if its warm enough ....lol
