Making homemade baits

Last summer I started using cut bait rigs with some success. I didn't like paying the price for the Herring strips so I'm thinking about making my own this year along with L wives. I was wondering if any of you Masters could give up some secrets on how you cure your baits and color them

The only problem is the NY bait laws. you can't transport alewives live or dead with out a permit. Pautzke firebrine, atlas mike and pro cure all work good though!

When do the Alewives start showing up around the docks?

I catch them on sabiki rigs. Just find a tight school up high and drop it in them. Caught an 8lb laker on the sabiki, had 3 or 4 others on the same day. They were catching the same alwives we were!
