But seriously yes you need one it's a safety thing. And a lot more ez to talk to friends without getting your phone out

I have one for safety hooked into my GPS and set up for MMSI broadcast in case of emergency. As for person to person  communication specially about where the fish is.... Let's just say that it is a thing of the past.

I use a portable Uniden VHF radio. It is just for emergencies and weather alerts as Verizon has a few dead spots on some of the lakes so my cell would not work in case of an emergency.
