Alewife Strips Instead of herring for meat rigs?

I know a lot of guys tried it before but I was wondering if its comparable to herring strips? If I cut and cure alewifes will they work better or not? I know herring has more oil to it and probably a little more durability but it's easier and cheaper for me to get my hands on them

Alewives are herring

An alewife is related to herring but is NOT the same fish. They look, feel and smell different and have different properties when cured and/or brined.
