Well, I run 27lb lead in the spring time, and I'll try running one down the center next week - reluctantly.  If I get flea fowled to death, someone on this thread is gonna owe me a beer, or two!  And a good beer, not the cheap swill I buy for my crew.

Seen guys use boards in heavy traffic.....never a good idea......lol.

Yup, or one of those church stern planners. They work great.

I use a balloon to about the size of a soft ball on shoot line and at times simply let out more line to get it further back out of the way

I've seen those and always wondered about them... seems to me they would cause some significant drag when being pulled backwards by a fish. The back of the cone shape looks about the complete opposite of aerodynamic, hate to lose gear and/or fish because of that.

scobar mentions a good idea that we used to do in years past the balloon rig  works and I used to use an offshore clip type or one of my home made ones to clip it to the line and take off on the way in much as you might do with a jug rig with the Seth Greens. Minimal drag on the way in too as most of it is out of the water at that point.
