Mercruiser 3.0

I just picked up a nice 19 ft open bow boat with a 3.0 mercruiser and I found out the hard way that the alternator isn't charging. Will that cause it to run kindve crappy. It sat a little while we drained all the gas and put fresh gas and with a good charged battery it ran great tonight then after the radio was on and lights depth finder it slowly started breaking up and wouldn't go over 20mph. I'm thinking maybe the inconsistent voltage isn't giving proper volts to the coil. Any insight would be great thanks in advance

it needs the proper voltage , or breaking down will be a problem . charge everythig up and try it turn all eletronics off see if running better

That's what I was thinking we went out last night and every time I'd hit trim button it would hiccup

you need to keep stable voltage !

I've been taking another battery just in case. it goes great till 10 15 mph and then will started running like crap plugs look good however there newer style electrodes plugs and I think the plain Jane plugs would work better

Do us all a favor and get a new alternator. You'll be much safer and nobody will have to rescue you
