Downrigging

I see alot of posts about what combo's work on down riggers, ie, FF, spoon/dreamweaver/ spin doctor ect, ect . . ., what I would like to know is there a general rule of thumb how far behind the ball to run baits ?

Depends what your running and how deep your fishing.  Clean spoons down deep then run close to weight.  Clean spoons fished shallow then run them out a ways.  Lone Flasher/flies run from 5 to 25 ft back.  (again run deeper, run closer)  If you're running a stacker then lower one about 10-15 ft longer than higher one.
