Does anyone target whitefish? What techniques and tackle are effective this time of year. I live near lake Pleasant which I’m told holds a lot of whitefish. I want to try something new but only found info on catching them through the ice.

Whitefish have small mouths. Use same general minnow rig up as Walleye but with smaller hooks. Also you have to pay attention, they don't strike the bait hard and you don't have to set the hook hard, a quick flick should do it. And they are one of the hardest fish to sport fish. You catch one or two as a sport fisherman in your lifetime, you are lucky. Its a rare skill for most people.
... Often they will be in close association with Walleye schools but be deeper down which is why they are sometimes hard to catch on a line because the Walleye are way more aggressive. You should also be on a school of Walleye in deeper water.

If I catch the accidental walleye I’m happy. The state has been stuffing eyes in the lake also. So use a worm harness with a minnow?

Go to the Lake Simcoe fishing forum and you will find a wealth of info. Usually caught thru the ice with a small ice fishing spoon called a Meegs tipped with some bait.

We target them on kinzu in the summer. They suspended down about 25 to 40 feet in the water. We use the same type lures and bait we do for walleye just downsize everything. They have soft mouths so we use #6 circle hooks and don’t set the hook they set it themselves. We also troll no faster than 1-1/2 mph. The slower the better for them as they don’t like to chase it. The average we were catching on Kinzu was about 14 inches. They are fun to catch and good eating. We use 1/2 a nightcrawler on small worm harness for the most part.
