What’s a good rod/reel combo for a 400 copper setup? What kind and how much backing?

An Okuma 55 series reel with either an Okuma Classic Pro GLT or White Diamond copper is a perfect match

400' of Blood Run 45# copper with 500' of Blood Run 65# braid

Depends on what we are targeting... Use can fish anything you want on copper.

So spoons, flasher/fly, flasher/meat, j-plugs are all feasible and widely used on copper setups for salmon/trout?

Look at the torpedo weighted steel as well. I had a tough time giving up our 450 copper, but after running the weighted steel for a year it's going on all of my long line rods! There's nothing out there that you can get to depths of a 200-600 copper on one reel.

We have 200' of weighted steel with 19 strand wire backing. The steel drops the same rate as copper with the wire backing. The 19 strand wire is clipped to our planer board releases anywhere from the end of the weighted steel (200') to whatever desired length out. There are a bunch of videos on youtube as well. It's really foolproof stuff.

I use the same. No more birds nests and cursing in the boat ( well .. at least not for copper f- ups).
