Sutton Spoon Company

Recommended Posts

Yeah Mike I've been on his boat, he's been on mine, I've been to his house, even in the basement, we've known each other for thirty some odd years and I ain't never been allowed to see that hoard of spoons - probably for the best - I might try to confiscate some. Looks like Mark should be set to fish Suttons for the rest of his life even if Les loses a few more rigs of them in Seneca!

And yes they seem to be more effective with SS single hooks. Also much easier to release them to fight again.

 Bob. Yes Don I've done that with nearly all my spoons over the years. Changed out to Mustad Siwash SS 9510xxx's. I don't do it on the smallest Suttons though as there is a weight/balance issue that can affect the action substantially (e.g. #5, #6 and #8s). I don't change the solid rings when I replace the trebles though... I cut the trebles off with wire cutters and then replace with the singles as I like the solid rings that come standard on the Suttons and with careful selection of the single hooks the weight balance doesn't affect the action significantly. The hooks come with open end.

I know this is an older post, but hey Sk8man I was hoping you could tell me what size Mustad Siwash SS 9510xxx hooks you used for the Suttons?  I have some that I'd like to replace the treble hooks on with single hooks.  Thanks, once again!, for any info.

For the bigger 88's, 35's and 71's etc. I use 2/0 and for the other smaller spoons I use the 1/0 but with the very smallest Suttons like the 5 and 8 I don't change them becaause I feel that even the 1/0 probably would throw off the balance but I don't put any more pressure on them than I have to either as they are kinda flimsey.

I started using Sutton spoons in 1963.The sutton 31 worked the best, didn't matter if hammered finish ot not. The trick was trolling fast enough so occasionally the spoon would flip.

Last weekend I visited the Sutton Spoon company in Naples, a walk into the twilight zone.

When Silver finish on the spoon goes deep it turns white, and chrome turns black. When near the top it has great reflection.  Best spoon for Browns is the Sutton West River.

Great fun going to the Naples store. The two women that run it are great, lots of time to reminisce. The only other spoons silver plated that really catch Lakers are Michigan Stingers, but a very different action.

The Suttons are good spoons and I have used them for over 50 years and my grandfather used them just after they came out around 1900. I have hundreds of them in various sizes and weights and finishes. A problem with them is that there have been plating problems with them for the past few years and the finish on them doesn't hold up like the older versions. That is why I suggested you try the Elmer Hinckleys gold and silver finishes as they are superb.

When it comes to silver plating why would Hinkley be using a plating different from Sutton, when there are Govt. imposed standards? I have new Sutton's  purchased a week ago, I will see how they hold up.

Also for some of the old ones I purchased some Rust-oleum metallic finish, "rich shiny finish fast drying", and I am going to try spraying several spoons, with three coats and see how it works on the upper water column. For the deep water 60-150 I use Stingers silver on one side, green on the other--usually works. Not all Stingers are silver plated, watch the packaging. I also use glow in the dark tape on one side, for deep water. I only fish Seneca Lake. You can tell if a spoon is silver plated by putting small dot of clorox on it, and it immediately tarnishes. You can remove the tarnish with a silver polish.

Plating is an art as well as a science. Yes, there are changes in government regulations requiring "adjustments" and some folks are more skillful than others in making those adjustments. Whoever does the plating for Hinckley is masterful at it.....that is all I can say. This is not to disparage Sutton (or anyone else for that matter) but it is a fact, and the proof is in a side by side comparison of the finishes which I'm not going to do on here... but give it a try for yourself! I am still a Sutton fan as well by the way:smile:
