Last year in September we fished in front of the Salmon at about 40 to 60 feet and there were huge schools of fish there. Naturally we presumed that these fish were salmon schooling up getting ready for a run on the river, but all the time we snagged perch on our lures. We realized then that these schools were perch and moved to deeper water. The schools we encountered there were in a fairly narrow band depth-wise  but hundreds of feet long. There must be millions of perch out there. and this is their spawning season. ( the end of it already).

When the perch survive to bigger sizes (bigger than bait sized), they behave just like other, bigger, game fish. And they will go deep in schools if living in truly deeper lakes, say, 25ft plus. Big perch that live out their lives in shallower lakes (max 15-20fow) will simply scatter everywhere in smaller pods until the approach of spawning.

ProfT and I fished this morning and perch are still bitting. Less large females and more males so it will likely be over by next week. I caught 3/4 of a pail, mostly 8 1/2-10".

Nice work guys!  Usually I'm jealous reading reports when I'm not fishing yet, but it had to have been brutal in this wind and cold.  2 more weeks for me till I'm in...I'm way behind, but gonna start uncovering this weekend.

I was wrong. Still all females full of eggs just smaller average than last week. I got 4 lbs. 10 oz. of fillets today.

Looks like Kring's is about done. Still plenty of perch but size has decreased significantly. Still managed a half pail in a few hours yesterday but lots of sorting. Time to hit the Lake for Browns tomorrow and try some other spots for perch. Also crappies and bullheads should be available soon.
