Possible drowning near Maplewood Park

A quiet night of fishing at the Genesee River gorge turns into a search and rescue mission. Police fear a 29-year-old man may have drowned. Police called the search off for the night because they said it was too dangerous for divers to go into the water.

Police said a man was fishing in the river when he fell on a rock. His friends tried to grab him, but he slipped through their hands and went under. Police said it happened along the Genesee River, near the Driving Park Bridge.

The Rochester Fire Department set up rescue stations along the river. The police department's scuba team was called, but it was too dangerous for anyone to go in the water. Police said the area where the men were fishing was not posted, but they said a person takes a risk when they go down there.

"It's very dangerous by the water, there is no doubt about it, this river moves at a great rate and we've had some rain it's very dangerous to be down there by the water," Capt. Kevin Costello with the Rochester Fire Department said.

Family members identify the man as Pedro Sanchez. They said he's a roofer who fishes everyday.

Sanchez's family continued to search the water until about 11:00 Sunday night when police made them stop because it was too dangerous. Police said the search will officially continue Monday morning.
