Handheld vhf

Is anybody using a handheld vhf radio compared to hard wired one.Just wondering how range was and stuff.

a hand held has very limited range. i wouldn't recommend any hand held for lake erie.

Tried it and only get 1 mile or so. Go hard wire with 8' antenae

agreed. used for for a few years. worked fine for talking to the guys in my immediate area, but outside of that, forget it.

Depends on what your intended use is... If you're looking to talk to people and monitor things like chatter/weather a handheld isn't the best choice. If you're looking for something as a safety precaution then a handheld is suitable and much better than not having anything.

I have a handheld as a back-up in case something happens to the main hardwired radio. True, range isn't as good as the main radio, but it does work.

Hand held are only designed for in the harbor use.

I ended up going with a full radio. Just got to get antenna now
