I know captains that run them all year long.

 

I grew up on Lake Michigan and it was a staple lure always in the water no matter time of year.

This time of the year it's not a bad idea to run a silver bullet bloody nose j-plug mid day.Has worked well for me in the past.

Speed will be plug dependent.  A size 5 plug will be dancing at a different speed than a size 3 plug.  A J-plug will have a different ideal speed compared to a Lyman plug.  Put them in the water and make sure they work erratically but don't roll over.
