Downrigger amps/volt fluctuations

Started the morning with .48 volts to the rigger and after an hour it now reads 1.1...yet it doesn't change when everything is shut off but the motor...what could be making it go higher the longer we're out here?

Are you using the AC or DC setting on your meter?

Switch to DC.

My apologies...I was using DC...had to look at the meter again..suffer from short term memory loss

Well, you should have 12 to 14 volts DC.

I do have that at the battery, but I thought the optimal rigger amps was around .58-.78

So, are you measuring amps or volts? I am confused.

Yeah me too, I guess I'm using DC mode and it's reading 1.00 on the rigger cable...guess I'll have to get an amp meter

No you’re doing it right. You are correct on the desired numbers. You were not clear in what you were doing. So someone was giving you advice on something else. you are checking your voltage/amps on your downrigger cable is correct? if so yes you want to be about .6 it rise because you boat is acting like a battery. It’s gradually growing the current as it’s holding more voltage/amperage. Does not necessarily mean you have a electric leak it’s way too complicated to discuss on here, but the black box would fix it
