Fishing action took off in the Lake Ontario tributaries last week immediately following our ho-hum report of last week. Yes, things can change considerably overnight and much cooler temperatures have been a catalyst for bringing fish into the streams. If we only had a bit more water flow for the smaller creeks. The biggest and best is 18 Mile Creek in Olcott where Burt Dam is a stopping point for salmon and trout. Like the riddle – what did the fish say when it ran into a concrete wall? Dam! Of course, that’s where fishermen are congregated, too. With big game hunting coming into a prime phase and the opening of ducks and geese on Saturday, it should help lessen the numbers of anglers. Go during the week if you can, too. Some big brown trout are being reported along with Chinook and Coho salmon, as well as steelhead. It’s not the prime run but there are good numbers of fish. Pier action has been hit for miss according to Karen Evarts at The Boat Doctors. Spoons and spinners have been catching a few fish here and there. Small boat trollers are also working the harbor and heading up the creek to take a few fish, too. Troll big J13 Rapalas or cast away with sticks, spoons, spinners or Rattlebaits. Egg skein fished under a float will work, too. The closer you get to the dam, the better off you are with egg sacs, skein or egg imitation presentations. Small jigs fished under a float will also catch fish. Tip them with a spike or wax worm. Casting the piers at Wilson could also produce a salmon or trout, too. Some big pike are hanging around, too.
