Live bait big lake

Has anyone ever tried to fish live bait for salmon or steelhead in the lake? I’ve been watch a lot of saltwater shows and was wondering if anyone has tried similar tatics in the lake?

I have tried minnows under a float off the end of piers in the spring about 7 ft down. Landed browns and steelhead

I'm planning to try it this spring on Lake Michigan once the alewives show up.  Going to net some at the pierheads and then head out to deeper water and send em down.

When spring thaw sends run off into the lake, a wiggler (mayfly larvae) under a bobber and floated out with the current will catch them all.  Whitefish, both the lake and menominee varieties, too.  Its better technique where the water is not too murky.  Be careful if you are standing on ice.  Have an escape plan in place if the ice you are on falls in.
