What do you guys run for a vhf radio. I want to put one on my new commander. Both have advantages

Been discussed numerous times , try search icon. IMHO purchase both . You have a longer range on mounted , nice to have a back up and if a "real " emergency happened and the boat was going down you can grab the handheld and use it while in the water.

Don't new radios have a distress button you can push that will send position continuous ?

I have both. DSC VHF fixed mount with 8' antenna, and Icom waterproof floating hand held in the ditch bag. Don't skimp out. We spend thousands on fishing equipment and lures, then cut corners on safety.

mounted with a good antenna. something like the Shakespeare 5225 xt. the quality of the antenna is more important than  the radio. just get a radio with the bells and whistles you want. but do not scrimp on the antenna. a hand held is good around the dock or in a group of boats. but a fixed with a good antenna is good for 15+ miles. 

 

I splurged and got a new radio with built in gps for my boat.

A one foot antenna good for about a mile of range under ideal conditions. But two antennas eight foot of height above the surface of the water usually only reach thirty miles of range. Shore side antennas reach a lot farther.
