So my understanding is that leadcore sinks at about 5 feet per colour so a 5 colour would go down 25' and a 10 aprox 50'. What I'm thinking is the line would continue to sink as you let out more backing and if you had enough you could get the 5 colour much deeper. Any thoughts on this ? What is the life of leadcore how often do you replace?

I use 12lb lead core and it dose go down 5ft per color, if you keep moving and don't use a heavy spoon or diving plug.

It also depends on your trolling speed. I try to stay at 1100 rpms. Being fishing this way for 60yrs, very effective method.

The 5' per color sink rate is correct for around 2.0 mph. At 2.5 mph the sink rate is less, around 37 ft deep for 10 color if I remember correctly. Some guys will add a 2oz snap weight on the 5 color to get it deeper with more backing out. I'm sure the 5 color would sink a little deeper with just more backing out but it wont keep the same sink rate as plain lead core and you would just be guessing at what depth it would be running at. I usually replace my leadcore every 3 years. I use it a lot on Erie for walleye.

If you let out more backing, it will go deeper. Thin wire will be most effective because of low water resistance although the diameter of the leadcore will work against it.
