http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/lawssrch.cgi?NVLWO:

JustTracyTrolling is correct.  This proposal only applies to wildlife.  Fish and Wildlife Law has  a section of definitions and the actual law (11-0103 6.a.)  reads:  “6. a. "Wildlife" means wild game and all other animal life existing in a wild state, except fish, shellfish and crustacea.”

It does appear that it would end the Coyote and Squirrel contests.

I stopped hunting about 40 years ago, but recently wanted to start again, so I took the course again in fall 2017.  A fair amount of time was given by both the instructor and the ECO who came to one session to the necessity of hunters presenting themselves and their sport in the best possible light, avoiding things like tying a dead animal to the hood (used to be required!) or stopping off at the local Wegman’s wearing the clothes you bloodied up gutting an animal, etc.  I believe it may have been the dumpster full of rotting carp at the boat launch that ended the bowshoot on Irondequoit Bay (but I’ll stand corrected if I am wrong, although I knew quite a few people in Sea Breeze that were pretty outraged by the stench.) The average citizen may not be at all aware of the potential damage to pets, and even eventually children, an expanding coyote population could present, and likely has no idea that the best time to hunt them is at night, but if they see or hear the “cuffs and collars” story of the Hamlin guys busted for hunting them from a motor vehicle with multiple unsecured firearms, they are likely not going to have the best impression of the remainder of the coyote hunters who are likely pursuing their quarry exactly as proscribed in the regulations.  And  braggadocio about blood sports ends up being a really good way for us to shoot ourselves in the foot with the general public as many others have pointed out, not the wisest approach in the modern world.

I really just cant imagine trying to get by in a world where I wont be able to pose and post my picture by 100 dead woodchucks and 130 dead squirrels after our weekend tournament

what is the world coming to

I can see that eating 130 squirrels would not be much of a problem.  Those 100 woodchucks might be a little more difficult, even if the competition did a great service to the farmers who have less potential for livestock (or themselves) with broken bones.

Pot calling the kettle black. Out of site out of mind... Why even open the door to scrutinize a dumb activity. Keep it low key and people won't care. You have to realize times change. Not smug at all.. On the money.

Can't go in the store with
blood on your pants from hunting rabbits squirrels etc cuz I'm going to offend somebody that's a joke. How about the people go around with their jeans wadded up under your butt showing their boxers off with some type of a 1-inch button in your ear and their earlobes hanging down to their shoulder that offends me. Sounds like left wing Barry Sanders socialism I say live free you wear your ear buttons and I go to the store with a little blood on my pants from hunting...

Well, friends. The people proposing this law are exercising their freedom of speech right ,as are the people who support them . That is a good thing. Those who do not agree can also exercise their freedom of speech right and oppose this law. That is what democracy is all about. It occurs to me though that the folks proposing this law know their way around the legal system, whereas those who oppose it on this website are just venting instead of effectively opposing the law. That is not a good strategy to get anything done or stopped.

There is freedom of speech , unless you are a kid on a bus talking about fishing .

And God forbid someone gets offended. Then  you can't talk about that anymore .

And there are a bunch more examples . Like praying or saying Christmas in school.

There is no true  freedom of speech anymore.

Get ready for 1984  Facecrime.

The problem with the people proposing this bill are from downstate the assembly districts that are predominately urban , with no hunting and little fishing , except the marine fishery We must depend on the upstate assembly districts to oppose these attacks on sport the down side is the disproportionate population density the liberals
push through their agenda with little chance of defeat it has little to do with freedom of speech. It is an all out attack on hunting and fishing and you can add gun ownership to the list I’d like to see what would happen to a bill like this that was introduced in say , Texas there would be many politicians lookin for gainful employment.

I was a commercial fisherman on Lake Erie for fourteen years . The media crucified us for everything. They turned public opinion against until we were unemployed. Meanwhile the USA imports three trilllion dollars of seafood annually. People with screw ball ideas usually end up getting their way because the media falls for their stupid ideas especially when wildlife and fish are involved. Do not sit back and let uninformed people take over the media and the fake news they put out .

Jimski2,

This is your best post ever! I totally agree with you on everything you said. That bill is crazy and will never pass, but sounds like you guys over there need to start gearing up for more of this nonsense...scary stuff.

Some folks may wish to take another look at the U. S. Constitution and First Ammendment. It is meant to reference rights of individual citizens NOT legislators or representatives or officials of the government in the course of their work duties constructing their misguided politically motivated ideas foisted off on the general public.

So, the guy with his pants not pulled up has created a negative attitude toward people who don’t like belts (), that is exactly my point.  If you hang a bear in your front yard, you will likely create a bad attitude in the minds of at least some people who drive by your house.  I recently read something where the writer spoke about the people who hang their deer at deer camp so they can see whose is biggest.  Obviously this writer had no idea about the work that goes into hanging the deer, or the need to quickly cool the meat, or the need to get it up off the ground, or even that the weight is less important to most hunters concerned with the “trophy” aspect than the rack size.  If we continue to allow this kind of ignorance to exist, we have only ourselves to blame when the ignorant come to take our “rights” (and the Constitution says you can keep and bear arms but says nothing about hunting).  The largest majority of the general population is on the fence about hunting, and the hunting safety instructor is making the point that if our actions, such as posting facebook pictures of a dead baboon or that “cute little mountain lion” we just gutted, push some of the fence sitters into the PETA camp, we are doing all sportsmen a disservice.   All the guys dragging black salmon with the milt and eggs oozing all over the sidewalks of Pulaski have pretty much turned the town off to all “fishheads”, and most of the locals only see those guys and the litterers, etc, when they see someone with a fishing rod.   The fact that you are allowed by Freedom of Speech to employ a lot of four letter words loudly in public does not equate to everyone being required to elevate you to the same level of respect as a preacher or an orator, people may still decide that you are a crass low life who doesn’t pull up his pants.  Same thing for the people who want to beat their chests showing off the “dark side” of the hunting experience, the person they turn off today is the person who will be voting to curtail their activities down the road.  If Trump had been tweeting a lot of what he’s tweeted since being in the Whitehouse during the campaign, we might be calling Hillary  the President, regardless of his “ Freedom of Speech” to say what he wants.   And as my father always pointed out when I played the “FofS” card, you can’t yell fire in a crowded theater.

Interesting topic here.  I am torn.  I am called a sportsman but I do not hunt for sport.  I reminded myself of that this morning when I pulled out venison tenderloin for dinner.

My thoughts:

I have gotten over 50 pheasants shot by well to do sportsman doing field trials.  I was able to get them because The guy I use to know told me they were just going to dump them in the ground if nobody wanted them and that was usually the case.  I have gotten over 3 dozen rabbits from a rabbit hunting contest because my neighbor use to do the weigh in and again nobody wanted them - coincidentally stopped the annual tourney because of gambling concerns.  I have scooped recently dead bass after weigh in at the launch.  I support people's right to do these events but the waste has never been good with me.  But on the other hand I know there has to be balance and so while predators don't always get harvested for a use, I still believe it is necessary.  If you don't have balance the ecosystem runs amuck.  The north west has a wolf problem now because of politicians and lobbyists.  How much money are they losing now because their elk herds are decimated?

As far as contests.  They bring people together.  If we are not together we are sitting by ourselves insulting one another on LOU.   My wonder is 1st fish, biggest fish, big buck - where is the line?

I enjoy pics but there is no obligation for people to post them.  However, keep them coming.

April 2007 Michael Vick is arrested for animal neglect.  Eventually serves 21 months prison time

On the morning of March 14, 2009, Donte Stallworth struck and killed a pedestrian while driving his car at the eastern end of the MacArthur Causeway in Miami Beach, Florida. ... 30 day jail sentence.

Animal abuse 21 months.  Vehicular Homicide under the influence 1 month.

Animal Abuse - instant notoriety.  Kill someone - people struggle to remember if they remember at all.

My point:  As a whole, we (in this society) value animals more than human life.

I can give more examples of upside down (West coast is full of them) world but I think you get my point.
