Over the years my team has released several "Leaderboard" Lakers back into the Niagara right after being weighed, what are the chances one of them gets caught and causes problem because of the gill plate punch???

They may swim away but their chances of survival are slim.  Hanging on a scale vertical is horrible for big lakers.  The DEC warns against holding big lake trout, musky and large northerns vertical because it damages their internal organs.

If your game is to catch large fish, then releasing large fish increases your opportunity to catch an even larger fish. It is safer to take smaller fish home to eat as they should have less contaminants. Removing smaller fish from the biomass supports a better forage base for the surviving fish.
