VHF Antenna

I've read a lot about antennas but still don't see the difference in the prices.  I'm probably going with a Shakespeare 5101 because it always comes up as rated #1 for $55 but I also see the 5226 xt (I think) is $150 and has good reviews too.  How much better is the more expensive one?  Clarity that much better?  Distance? I'm racking up cash in this boat fast.  If the $55 antenna is pretty much as good then I'll go with that.  Is it like going from a St. Croix to a G Loomis (hardly noticable) or like going from an Ugly stik to a G loomis (VERY noticable)?
