Can anyone reccommend where I can get a starter for a 1975 johnson 50hp outboard. I had this starter rebuilt and it only lasted 5 starts until the brushes broke and melted the solder off the connections. I went to every marina in Oak orchard no one had one. The places around where I live are quoting me $200. I also need a Alt for a 1965 Chris Craft with a Ford interceptor. I am guessing that the motor is either a 260 or 289 ford. I found one place here, they told me to bring it in, they would send it out and have one made for $400. Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

I may have a starter here. I'll have to do some checking. As for the alt.. Is it a delco or prestolite? altho back then it could be anything. Chris Craft used some off the wall parts back then especially with Ford power.

Hank, thanks I'll get the serial Number off the motor and send it to you. Not sure of the make of the Alt I will check to see. I had that rebuilt also, but it only puts out 10 volts and when I got it back I noticed on of the braces behind the pulley was broke so Im figuring to buy a newer one rather than having that one rebuilt again. I had spoke to Chris Craft and they couldn't tell me what motor was in it. They said that they sold that boat with 3 different motors 221, 260, 289 all I can find on the motor is ford interceptor 140 hp.

Wondering if you have seen this before? On the chris craft it jumps out of gear, it has done this since I bought it last year. There is no set time when it kicks out. I have had it over 45mph when it kicks out, sometimes I can't get over 12mph, and while trolling it would kick out all the time. I torn the outdrive all apart and inspected all the gears, Power shaft, shifting gears, prop shaft, shifting linkage, all are in brand new shape not a mark on them. I have tried to adjust the linkage and have it set where it goes forward and reverse. the only thing that I can think of that is left, is the teeth from the engine and the power shaft may be stripped. I don't know I haven't really wanted to pull the motor. When it kicks out, you hear a clicking noise that sounds like when you put in into gear slowly, all i have to do is lower the throttle to almost neutral and it kicks back into gear. If you have any suggestions please le me know.

I had this problem before and it turned out to be a small cast iron piece on the moter right at the end of the shift linkage. Your's could be broken or loose if you want to check it. Have someone shift the lever while you watch to see if it slips or is broken.

Send the serial # I'll do some research on it as too what c.i. it is. You should be able to convert it over to a new style standard delco with no problems. Jumping out of gear. What kind of drive is on it? i/o with a jack shaft, standard i/o or inboard?

The outdrive is a Interceptor outdrive. The shifting cable connects to a lever on the top of the outdrive. This lever bolts to the back of the and has a "C" bracket internally. I'll explain how it is set up, maybe this will help. The shaft comes from the motor to the outdrive. In the outdrive it has a spider gear (like a pinion gear in a vehicle rear end), then there is two gears that are free spinning on the power shaft (forward and reverse), When the shifting lever is moved the "C" bracket slides the shifting collar either up or down that is keyed to the power shaft, the power shaft is geared to the prop shaft. this is a very basic old school outdrive. like I said before all the teeth and the collar tabs look brand new not a scratch on them. I forgot to add one thing, that it only jumps out of gear in forward and works in reverse, sorry about that.

stricken, How is the end play in the prop shaft. It sounds like under load the pinion drive gear and the power shaft are nolonger meshing. Is the shifter or shift lever going into neutal position?

Hank, I got the number off the outboard. its a 1971 50hp johnson. Model # 50ESL71S... ishopmarine.com sells the after market starter replaces O.E. #'s 384163, 387684, 389275, 585063, 586280. Let me know if you have one laying around..

PS: On the Ford Interceptor , I have to rewire the ALT anyways can I buy any Ford self-exciting ALT for a small block V8 and install it (may have to build new brakets) but can this be done?

Did some research on the drive. It was made by Easton and they are very hard to find parts for. I have one source in the midwest where I might be able to get more info on it.

The starter I'm pretty sure I have. I just haven't had a chance to look yet.

www.marineengine.com then call napa the part numbers are the same as there stock numbers parts are cheeper at napa or about the same without shipping cost. just ordered everything to go .020 over new berings pistons, seals, should have like new moter for under 6 bills includeing boreing and machine work.nice website.
