You can use a short shaft kicker with an i/o if you use a kicker bracket with a long enough stroke to get the motor down in the water enough. I ran a short shaft Honda with a Merc i/o for years. Only issue with short shaft was that it come out of the water if things got rough. A long shaft is a better choice and what I run currently. If you're buying a motor buy a long shaft, but if you have a short shaft and a tight budget you can make it work. Hope this helps.

thanx that will help I am buying one but I am also buying the whole boat so money will be tight and I found a 2005 9.9 merc dirt cheap so it looks like it will have to do for now ;)

You can steer your kicker with an EZ steer bar. If you have an autopilot, and you have hydraulic steering you should have no problem steering from the main engine even with the main engine off. Check the site above and I'm sure you can find a bar that will work for your boat. These steering arms are very versitile and easy to set up, if you have a question you can give them a call and they will help you with any questions or installations.
