I just read that zinc anodes are for saltwater use only. First time I've heard that. Is that true? Is it a case of shorter life expectancy or complete ineffectiveness or is it complete BS?

How can you tell which you have on the shaft of your Merc outboard (Saltwater Optimax never used in the saltwater environment)?

If you didn't add it.  It came from the factory with Zinc.

Thanks for the replies. Another lesson learned.

 

For sale- complete set of zinc anodes for 96 Alpha One Gen II out drive. $2,500.00 OBO.

Yes I suspected that but I am wondering if there is a way to tell by looking at it because I think mine was replaced a few years ago.when I had some servicing done.
