My boot on my OMC out drive (400 series) is about 7 years old now, has the muskrat guard on it, still looks new and is still flexible. Boat is trailered most of the time, spends mabee 4 weeks in marinas during different derbys, and is completely covered for winter but not heated storage. How long can I go (safley) before replacing it. Probabaly a couple horror stories would be good for me,

7 years is pressing it. Check it well for dry rot and go from there. For a sense of insurance that you won't have any costly problems. I would replace it. It's not a big deal to do & inexpensive compared to what could happen if it does create a leak.

Hey Hank, thanks for the responce...should have mentioned it's a 22ft. Aluminum boat, don't know if that makes any difference.....when installing a new boot what's best for a sealant.....silicone or marine sealant?............Craig

I have an alpha one out drive and have the same concern as Handyman. Can I replace the boot, gimble bearing, and shift cable myself or do you really need the special tools? Not sure what I'm getting into. Anyone been there?

Two entirely different drives. OMC in his vintage has a large rubber boot that attaches to the transom. Yours is a M/C and has bellows. If you have questions pm me.
