When and where

I some help. My 12 year old son has been fishing with me for the last 3 years. He is a fairly decent fisherman and has caught panfish, pike, walleye, small and largemouth bass. Now he wants to catch some steelhead and salmon. I have salmon fished on Lake Huron many years ago and used to do fairly well. But as we all know the salmon fishing in Lake Huron is more or less over. My questions are, where, when, and what presentations would you recommend. I believe I have everything I need as far as rods, reels, tackle, downriggers, etc, but since it has been a while since I have fished for them there may be newer and better lures. He and I would probably make it a 3 day weekend and we would definitely tent camp. Any assistance would be appreciated

where are you located and what part of the lake are you thinking of fishing? Also, what time of year? That info would help us better guide you to the funnest trip for your son.

I live just south of Toledo, Ohio. As far as what part of the lake, I have no idea. I have never been on Lake Ontario and that is one of the reasons that I am considering it versus Lake Michigan. I don't really care what time of the year. I am fairly wide open. He is on spring break the week of April 6th and then out of school from the second week in June till August. If he keeps his grades up like he has been I would even consider letting him take a day or two off to go fishing with his old man.

Early to mid May off the Niagara bar / Olcott / Wilson area is great. That would probably be your best bet. Watch the reports section of this site when the season gets cranked up and choose a hot port and go. Ask guys from that area and they will more than likely give you accurate reports.

Gambler is right. Any time in May is great from the Niagara to Olcott and sometimes on to Oak Orchard and it is the closest destination to you.

Easy straight shot across 90 all the way to Buffalo then some joggin' around to get to Youngstown (mouth of the river), Wilson, or Olcott.

Memorial Day weekend (hint...) has always been pretty good to me in the Wilson / Bar area

Yep Jeb, we'll be back this May. I think the big guy is sitting this one out! So don't look forward to us making any "chum" lines this spring...

But keep us a few bar stools open...

We are planning on being up at least for the Wilson KOTL, hopefully Memorial Day weekend as well.
