Hi everyone. Sorry my poor English I hope you people can stand it. I'm Salmon trolling guide from Finland and I find that site. We using here almost same kind techniques like big lakes, and I want to read and learn more about your style. Here we fishing Atlantic and Land locked salmons, using only baitfish and our own made flashers & baitholders. Northern Europe baitfishing is most popular way to caught big salmons. We using always also downriggers and side planers and our normal trolling speed is 2-3 kn

I want to ask forum users is whole anchovy baitfishing popular any area in Usa/Canada? I heard somewhere real baitfish using is prohibited on great lakes?? Is that true?

I'd love to run into some Atlantics the size you guys run into. Our Kings are something else though. You troll a little faster than we generally do. We like the 2-3 miles per hour.

Live baitfish can be used on the Great Lakes if they were freshly caught in the Great Lakes or they can be purchased in bait shops provided they have been tested and certified free of diseases. Even then they can only be used for a few days.

I am rather new at fishing the great lakes but use spoons, flashers, flys and dypsy divers. Some of us use cut bait but that is a little more difficult due to a VHS virus (viral hemorrhagic septicemia) found in some fish from certain waters.

In most lakes we may fish with bait fish live and dead. One exception I know of is Quebec, Canada where I believe live bait is not permitted. My understanding is we may not use sport fish or their parts as bait.

By the way I spent a summer in Helsinki, Marjaniemi and some of those weeks in a place up north called Viitasaari.

Your English is easy to understand, what are the other 4 languages you studied in school?

We using lakes to landlockeds same speed like you, but Atlantics we using little higher speed. Before we create that new baithead we use many another labels and then we must use lower speeds, because bait rotation adjusting is very difficult to higher speed. Now we can use spoons, wobblers etc. to same speed with baits... If somebody wants to use that kind powerless way to fish

I need to know bait using rules for great lakes, because I planning to come fishing there future. Is there difficult to find/buy real bait? Size 5-7 inc Or do I must use Gulp bait and Baitrix style rubber baitfish?

What colours is recommed to Baithead and Flashers.

Welcome to the forum! It is great to see the similarities of our fishing methods. Your VK site is impressive, really like the great photos in the gallery. What is normally size fish on lake Ontario? What is best time on year fish there and what kind salmons there can wait? Here we have winter now and our waters have ice shield. Only south sweden can fish salmons now. I just come home holiday from florida, and next time when I visiting USA I wanna go fishing salmons.

Yes they have that fantastic "classic" model. That was many year european No.1 flasher but now our end of last year released new VK2 is rising absolutely hottest flasher in europe, simple reason is that new kind irregular swimming action. I wait to have oppornity test these US waters, here is 25 salmon best caught in few days fishing trip to lake Vättern Sweden, fish took one and same rod with VK2 large and whole baitfish with VK-Baitholder all the time.

Mika Welcome to the board.I like the action of your VK2 flashers how they swim all around and change directions. Will they be coming to cabala's also? Nice rig also looks like it can take some good water. I also have a Suzuki 4 stroke on my boat.The best time for the big king salmon is mid august to September in the eastern basin when the 3 to 4 year old's are staging for there fall run up the rivers they get to be 35 lbs with some higher than that. For Fast and furious fishing. The sprint time ( late April to the end of may)at the Niagara bar area is the best.You get a lot of 2 year olds with a few 3 year olds thrown in, it is common for 25 to 30 fish a day if you hit it right.Summer time can be great also you just have to go out in deeper water to find them.I am by far no expert.But this is what I have learned over the years and from the guys on this site.Hope this helps

Like Erin said, the august / september time is best for large king salmon up to 40lbs (18.14kg). However the normal catch is usually 20 to 30 lbs (9.07 - 13.06kg). It is a trophy over 35lbs (15.88kg) for a king salmon. We have coho, and atlantic salmon as well as brown trout, steelhead, (rainbow), and of course, the not so popular but always willing to bite, lake trout.

We are under winter conditions here too in New York and Lake Ontario as well as the rest of the Great Lakes, but april is a good start month for the fishing season. Typically western New York waters are the earliest to start the salmon fishing because of the warmer water flow from the Niagara river. There you can experience fast action off the bar as it enters Lake Ontario. The action picks up along the New York shore towards my home port of Point Breeze about mid May as the larger salmon start to spread out east. By late June and into July the action is mostly off shore for salmon in depths up to 550 feet of water. We find bait clouds and determine the thermocline (temp change depth) in order to target the best chances of hooking up with kings. Steelheads are always a favorite of mine and can be found mostly in 200 to 550 feet of water during summer. They will provide an excellent fight on light tackle with many walking on the water and jumping several times during a fight.

Hey Mika, Years ago you sent me some flashers to try. Great stuff. Let me return the favor. Send me your address and I will send you some flies and bait heads free. Guys are doing great on a reservoir

in NJ fishing for lakers, rainbows and browns with these heads. They are running minows/shinners they get from the local tackle shop. Jason will be trying them on the finger lakes for us soon. We have 2 styles of flies and the new Vibrators that are also working with long leads. Take care, BW
