OK guys, this has probably been asked a thousand times already, but what knot do you recommend to connect SS wire to the reel arbor? It’s my understanding that no backing is necessary with 1000’ of wire on the correct size reel (30 series?) but I may be off base. I’d like to hear what you guys think.

Thanks.

I use saltists and they have a little nub on the spool. I tie a little overhand knot around that nub (tough to tighten down well) and use electrical tape under and over the first wraps to hold it in place and prevent slipping. Never had a problem.

Backing is necessary! 100yds of 25lb mono then your 1000ft of wire will fill a 30 size Okuma reel.  Check the spooling chart at the top of this section of the forum.

Thanks for the responses guys, that was exactly what I was looking for. Glad I asked. Sometimes I feel stupid asking these questions, but if it's going to help me (and others) have the right setup I can live with it.

FF,

I don't agree, as I have been using only wire on my diver rods for the last 30 years with absolutely no problems.  Mono degrades way too soon, & I am not going to worry about that with my set up.

Good luck, & tight lines

Unreel is correct about the recommendation from Tuna Tom's.

I spoke with them about it some time back and one reason was that the wire tightens down on the spool itself putting a lot of unnecessary pressure on the spool perhaps leading to other problems. Secondly, if 50 ft of 40 lb. mono is put on first it helps to keep the wire from nesting under itself as the mono packs down underneath and it is easy to tie to. I use a small Spro barrel swivel.  The mono remains under the wire at some depth so it doesn't degrade from sunlight etc. and with 1,000 ft of wire nobody fishing for kings is going to get spooled (despite worrying about it sometimes:lol:) so you don't ever approach that point in the wire unless you are taking it back off. It also helps when you put new wire on to align it to the level wind so it is centered on the reel when starting out to get it evenly applied. The first time out with it put on a heavy sinker or dipsy set at zero and let a whole bunch of the wire out and then retrieve it and it should tighten down evenly on the reel evening out things.
