Just wondering about the process of getting a captains license... Any info you could start me with? Thanks!

There are a bunch of hoops to jump thru here is the big one:

#1 -- You must have 360 days on the water in the last 5 years. Most people do not qualify for this unless they have quit their jobs and fished a season or spend 75 days a summer on the water for the last 5 years.

Pleasure unit,

The best advice i can give you is to go through a captains course like the one offered by Sea tech marine training. If you have your mind set in getting your license than its really the best way to do it. Youll learn that there is alot to it and they will walk you through the process from start to finish. http://www.seatechmarinetraining.com/

heres a list of requirements:

red cross cpr certified

red cross first aid certified

character references- http://www.seatechmarinetraining.com/docs/character.pdf

drug test

sea service form- http://www.seatechmarinetraining.com/do ... vessel.pdf

physical- http://www.seatechmarinetraining.com/do ... ysical.pdf

pass exam

Hope this helps!

The above links provide some great information. I would also recommend Mariners School.

The sea service time required is: 90 days in the last three years, either offshore or inland and a total of 360 days of sea time since the age of 15. The hardest part of this is ofcourse documentation. If you don't or have not kept a log book, it is tough to go back. I would encourage all youngsters to keep a log, even if it's a rough log; you never know when you are going to need it.

Dont look too far into the log info stuff. It's really one of the easiest parts. It's not that detailed or anything

Thanks for the info and links.... looks like the 360 days will be a major hurdle. I guess its time to start that log book! Any requirements to fish with someone?

Honestly do not waste you time on a log book. It's not that big of a deal. If you become a captain and start running trips then keep one. I have the piece of paper in front of me that you have to fill out to get your license and its nothing. I just finished all my schooling and tests a month or 2 ago and its all fresh.

Greg,

It is 13 pages long. I copied a couple extra sets if you want a set of them no problem. PM me as we live close. I am in the process of re-newing again. Plus i can show you my previous re-newals filled in, if your interested. And I just finished the T.W.I.C. identification card deal you would need also to enter secured ports (Rochester-Oswego). Boy don't get me going on everything else!

You may remove the gills and entrails, bleed them down and place them on ice, but the heads and tails must be there for the law enforcement guys to do their job.
