Have not had time to post about Bear's derby a few weeks ago. We got a fair number of fish but none the size we needed.. It was fun to play in the waves. Of interest to me was the fact that one of the fish I kept to eat had 4 smelt and a goby in its gut. Anyone else see the smelt returning?     Wes

That's cool, nice to see a variety of bait in any lake. Was the fish you caught shallow?

There are still some Smelt in the Fingers but not in past numbers....I thought they were pretty much extinct here on Canandaigua but there are a few left that we have caught accidentally through the ice while fishing for perch. I haven't heard of runs in the Spring for years now though

I hope so too Wes. I have a lot of fond memories both as a kid and adult of being out in the creeks in the Spring with a Coleman lantern and net getting them and seeing the occasional rainbow scoot out of the shallows in the light.
