Not sure about browns but for erie most guys use a medium action rods 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 and a size 17 or 27 or similar reel. Braid or mono I personally run braid on everything with no pronlems. I'm a big fan of diawa wilderness rods for 20 bucks they hold up well.

I've been running the Daiwa Great Lakes Telescopic 8'6" planer board rod the last few seasons for Browns and Walleye behind in-lines. They work great, and are very reasonably priced:

For a reel you can't beat the Daiwa Sealine. It's been a Great Lakes workhorse for many years. I'd recommend the 27 size with the power handle - SG27LC3B:

I use Okuma dead eye rods 7.5 ml rods with Okuma convector cv20d reels spooled with 12 lb big game.  When the walleye move deeper, i replace the reels with 30 size loaded with 5 color cores.
