The ice boom protects slush from blocking the Power Authorities  intakes above the falls. A lot of current  happens there and the value of the power generated there is valued in the millions daily.

Yesterday Lake Erie had a lot of open water off Sturgeon Point. Warm water from the western basin should be flowing through the Welland Canal to Port Dahlousie and Port Weller. Fishing on the Bar should start soon. A lot of ice is held back by the Power Authorities boom now so the lower Niagara River is take your chances.

Ice coverage yesterday was estimated at 1%. It looks like they will melt the ice in the lake now.

NE winds the next couple days might push it back West and melt it off before the boom comes out.

I heard through the grape vine that boom removal will start this Thursday!

Won't make much of a difference, going to be ice free by next week with or without boom removal.

It is best to melt the ice in the lake. Happens quicker and less damage.

Who told you this ? Or is it something that you came up with on your own ? Before the boom when the ice chunks came down the river they would on occasion scrap the bottom and self dredge the river as well as taking out weeds and what not. Yes some docks would take a hit ,but that's on the owner's for putting them in harm's way. Do away with the boom.and let mother nature dictate it's own course. You know the big money power authority would not let this happen. Somewhat surprised the environmentalist have not put up a law suit against them. It messes with our ( farmers ) springs for starters. Really doesn't help the upper river's ecosystem and yes,  those that live close to the now colder lake burn more fuel heating our homes , which contributes to your global warming with all that carbon monoxide being pumped into the ozone.

They pay Buffalo millions to allow them to put the boom up. In a cash starved city, they are not complaining that there is an extra two weeks of thermostat tweeking from persistent ice. Delaying spring actually helps protect tree buds from an spring frost by delaying bud opening

" They " is we the people ,that pay taxes and in this case, the electric bill. Just another scam by the state to take your money. Just like the Thruway and Peace Bridge doing away with tolls after the construction bonds were paid off. Never going to happen. Delaying spring is messing with Mother Nature , buds ,schmuds.

The warmer surface water formed in the western basin will return here faster now when the generally SW breezes return. The remaining ice is going fast now.
