Signal flairs for great lakes

My hand held flairs have expired again but I have the launch type for the gun.

Does anyone know what the exact requirements are? I was told we need one or the other but not both. It seems like I buy them every spring.

Any help would be appreciated.

When I was boarded last spring on the niagara river that was one of the first things they looked for was to see if I had flares and if they were expired so it's worth the $ to have up to date flares they asked for everything that was supposed to be legal on the boat.I was glad that I had everything. They were looking at everything the throw cushion, life jackets you name it they looked.So it's worth it's weight in glod in my books
