Good Afternoon.  With March finally getting here after a long winter we can start thinking about some spring brown trout fishing at last.

Down here in CT we are supposed to hit 60 degrees this weekend and hopefully some of that spring weather will hang around into next week!

Curious if anyone could suggest a launch or 2 that may be open for launching in the next couple / few weeks?  I am hoping to do some fishing near the mouth of the Salmon River.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

Genesee River is open, Sandy Creek in Hamlin will be open shortly and Irondequiot Bay will open up enough really soon.

The Genesee can be really bad this time of year. Go really slow and stay out of the brown water on the lake. There can be trees, telephone poles, dumpsters, you name it floating just under the surface.

And you know, the kings hit really good this time of year too. You might want to target them instead of browns. On a good day you can catch more kings than browns.

Thanks for the reminder about the debris. Hopefully we bump into some spring kings also. Going to hold off on fishing until at least that weekend after St. Pattys Day. 🇮🇪🍺

How big a boat?  Pine Grove may be open soon?  Its right on the mouth of SR.

Pine Grove Boat Launch (ny.gov)

Saturday the 12th most of this area ( Pulaski,Port Ontario) is expecting 6-10" of SNOW.  So not sure, I'd probably be thinking another 2 weeks.

Not so sure if Mexico Point launch is looking like, could be some logs or ice in there still.   Mexico Point Boat Launch (ny.gov)

Thanks for that info.  We will be fishing out of a 17 foot aluminum.  Not something you can pick up off the trailer for sure and push or walk to some open water.

Anyone else been out poking around at the ramps yet?

Thinking that we may end up over by Oswego for better conditions.

Pisco just posted videos from yesterday ( Thurs) catching browns in the Lake just off of SR.  Said there was still some ice in river but past two days its been 40s.
Easily put in a lightweight 17 footer off Pine Grove.  A friend launched his fairly heavy Penn Yann off there last Fall.

Spring Brown Trout fishing is best where near  shore flow of warmer water attracts the trout to and the bait fish. This could be from farm fields, sewage plants, creeks etc. A surface water temperature gauge is very important. Side planers are where the fish flee to as your boat spooks the fish away from your boats track You are herding the fish out there... Floating stick baits avoid snags when you make a turn or stop to free up a snagged lure.. Spoons and spinners are snag magnets. You will be fishing from 3 to 15 feet of water. Muddy water has clear water below the surface waters. and the fish are there avoiding sun light. Bright red, chartreuse flourescent colors are good. Kings hit Rapala J13 plugs well. Long lines area waste of time. .Off shore winds cause an upwelling 0f colder deep lake water on the beaches.
