Light for downrigger depth counter

Has anyone come up with a reasonable light for a downrigger depth counter? I was thinking of a single LED wired to the power lead, somehow mounted above the counter. Night trolling the more I can keep my headlamp off, the better my night vision.

 Not a cheap option, but the Scottie 2116’s have a lighted digital counter. It is faint blue backlight so to not negate night vision. Other than that, I can’t think of a cheap option. What about a cheap clamp on bench light?  Likely kinda overkill though.

Use your cell phone. Either a bright screensaver or worst case it’s flashlight.

No chance of something bad happening there in the dark using your phone at the rail.

[Misdirection]

Use a light that clips on the rim of your hat. If its dark enought to need to see the counter. You probaably need it to change lures and remove hooks anyways.
