So my boat always steered flawless 2002 5.7 merccruiser with power assist. So I was cleaning everything in the back and greasing and I took out the pin that holds the steering cable to the assist and I read that when re installed the flats on the assist arm must be vertical. I put a wrench on the steering cable to turn it slightly so the flats are facing up and it made it extremely hard to turn esp right. Went back n and messed with it turned the steering cable slightly diff it loosend it up perfectly. But it’s very little effort the jam nut on the steering cable can be moved and m afraid it’s going to go back the the hard position.. when it’s in the hard position you can hear fluid being forced back through when turning right!! This is hard to explain as I’m not really familiar with the setup but anyone who’s worked on them before?
